Species Interactions:
Predator: an animal that naturally preys on other animals; example: Jaguar
Prey: an animal that is hunted and killed by another for food; example: Poison Dart Frog
Herbivory: organism that eats only plants; example: Spider Monkey
Parasitism: the relation between two different kinds of organisms in which one receives benefits from the other by causing damage to it; example: Phorid Fly and the Leaf-Cutter Ant. The Phorid fly lays eggs on the leaf-cutter ants head, when the eggs hatch they attach to the leaf-cutter and suck their blood
Resource Partitioning: The differential use by organisms of resources such as food and space; example: Spider monkeys spend most of their time high up in the forest canopy, eating fruit, leaves and insects found in the treetops. Poison arrow frogs subsist almost entirely on insects, but since they are mostly confined to the ground, they don't compete with the spider monkey
Mutualism: An association between organisms of two different species in which each member benefits; example: fruit of some plants and fruit eating birds. The fruit provides nutrition for the bird and in return the bird disperses the seeds of the plant
Commensalism: an association between two organisms in which one benefits and the other derives neither benefit nor harm; example: the tremendous numbers of vines, mosses, lichens and climbing plants that use the trunks and branches of trees for support or substrate
Predators/Prey of the Amazon Rain Forest:
-Spider Monkey: eats fruits, seeds, and leaves.
-Golden lion tamarin: eats fruits, insects, spiders, lizards
-Sloth: eats fruits, leaves, and bugs.
-Giant river otter: eats fish, small reptiles and birds.
-Capybara: eats grass, aquatic vegetation, melons and squashes.
-Macaw: eats nuts, fruits and seeds.
-Anaconda: dosn't eat offen.
-Poison Dart Frog: eat termites, crickets, flies and ants
-Green Anaconda: eats large rodents, small mammals, frogs, fish, and crocodiles.
-Venus fly trap: eats insects to get nutrients.
-Black tarantula: eats insects.
-Leat-mimicking praying mantis: eats insects, invertebrates and vertebrates.
-Caiman: eats fish, crabs and shrimp.
-Harpy Eagle: eats small birds.
-Amazon River Dolphin: eats over 50 types of fish.
-Ocelot: eats small mammals, birds, lizards and snakes, and many more carnivores.
-Jaguars: eats a variety of animals including turtles, tapirs and deer
